Laser Cutting Explained in a Nutshell

What is laser cutting?

In laser cutting, materials are heated with pinpoint accuracy using a laser beam until they melt or vaporize. At the same time, cutting gases are used; these are blown under pressure into the cut to support the laser beam and prevent the formation of burrs and oxide.

FAQs

Here you’ll find the most important questions and answers about laser-cut parts. Feel free to ask us your question via chat—we’re happy to help!

3D laser cutting is primarily used for complex, three-dimensional products, such as openings or pipe bodies.

2D Laser cutting is the optimal solution for cutting plate-shaped material. Almost all materials can be cut quickly and cost-effectively. Even small quantities can be produced economically.

The special feature of laser fineblanking is that the kerf in laser fineblanking is created by drilling individual holes in a row with minimal heating of the material. This makes it possible to cut even the most delicate parts.

Sublimation cutting is mainly used for fine cutting tasks, as the kerf remains free of oxide and burrs thanks to the cutting gases used.

The advantage of fusion cutting is that the cutting edges remain burr-free thanks to nitrogen or argon as the cutting gas. This ensures high cutting quality and precision. It is one of the laser cutting processes.

Flame cutting is a laser cutting process. In flame cutting, oxygen is used as the cutting gas to achieve a very high cutting speed. Even thick sheet metal and structural steel can be cut without any problems.

Laser cutting involves the following laser cutting processes:

  • Flame cutting
  • Melt cutting
  • Sublimation cutting
  • Laser fineblanking
  • 2D Laser cutting
